Farmers’ markets

Farmers’ markets are an increasingly popular way to buy local. People like them as they are a way to meet several producers face to face, and there is always the opportunity to chat and to find out more about how and where the food is produced.

Markets usually take place once or twice a month in some of our market towns and gateways to Bowland. Our cheese, meat and veg producers are usually well represented.

  • Lancaster - Market Square - 2nd Saturday in the month, 9.30am to 4.30pm
  • Clitheroe - Market Square - this is to be held once a month in 2007 - for details phone Frank Watson on 01200 443012
  • Bentham - High Bentham Market Hall - 1st Saturday in the month, 9.30am to 1.30pm
  • Settle - Market Square - 2nd Sunday in the month, 9am to 3pm
  • Skipton - Canal basin - 1st Sunday in the month

There are also regular markets at Longridge, Garstang, Bentham, Settle and Clitheroe.

Northern Harvest (www.northernharvest.co.uk) also delivers to homes in the area.

Farmers’ markets are supported by North West Fine Foods and the Yorkshire and Humber Regional Food Group. These groups also run Food Lovers’ Festivals, like the annual event at Stonyhurst in the Ribble Valley each August.

Walk of the Month:

Bluebell Woodland

| Bluebell Woods

A wonderful time of year to see the bluebells in Bowland! Why not do this short walk starting from Calder Vale - on Sundays in May the ladies of Calder Vale run ‘bluebell teas’: homemade refreshments are available in the village hall, in aid of the church mission hall.
